Salford Advantage: Careers & Enterprise Virtual Drop-In

This afternoon I decided to attend another Online Salford Advantage session, prior to today I think when I was scrolling through Advantage I was only really reading the titles and from there I decided the sessions weren't for me. Today I realised that the reason I’m not finding sessions that I think I could benefit from is because I’m not looking in-depth at what it is these sessions are all about. So I decided to scroll through them once again and try to view them with a different perspective. Instead of concerning myself with how they won’t benefit me I decided to read each description and see what was there that I thought could help me now or in the future.

Careers & Enterprise Virtual Drop-In, this was actually a session I had scrolled passed multiple times. When first reading it my brain had registered it as a session not meant for an art and media student, I’m not sure where this stigma stemmed from but I now believe it was due to me misunderstanding the meaning of the word ‘enterprises’. I was also put off by the use of ‘drop-in’ because in my mind this was going to mean I was going to be talking a lot and possibly one on one, which I viewed with absolute terror, especially given that it might not even be meant for students like me.

Fortunately I decided to read the description which led me to discover the list of content they plan to advise on. To list just a few it mentioned:

*Updating your CV or cover letter

*Searching for job roles

*Job applications

*Self employment

*Prep for interviews

I know this is a session I could definitely benefit from and I also think I need to practice speaking to individuals. I don’t know if on an online setting whether this could be what I’m required to do in the future whilst looking for a job given the current situation with the Pandemic.
