Salford Advantage: How to Bounce Back and Build Resilience

This morning I am attending an online session with the University Library. I was drawn to this Advantage Session by the word ‘resilience’ . It came to my attention during the short film project that I have a tendency to panic after I get halfway through a project. At the time I reflected on past projects and realised that I tend to engage in the same process of doubt and later on stress, as I usually come to the irrational conclusion to attempt to change my whole project in favour of something else. This has consequently led to me not having enough time to finish some projects to a standard I would have preferred. When I realised this I decided to discuss it with my mentor she advised me that it came from a lack of confidence in my work, and that with time and experience I would build resilience and confidence in what I was doing and will be less concerned with other people's opinions.

Academic Resilience:

  • The ability to bounce back from challenges and adversity

  • Being able to grow and progress

  • Being able to reflect upon yourself

  • Taking responsibility for where you could improve

The instructor asked us all to write in the chat box about what drives both our fears of studying and of failing.. Mine were as follows: afraid of failure, disappointing people around me and not doing as well as my peers. It was relieving and validating to know that I wasn’t the only one with these fears and that plenty of other students feel the same way.

We ended the session by reflecting on past work we were proud of, I admit I did find this one harder than the fears one and at the time I didn’t write anything but now I would say I’m proud of my short film project specifically of the storyboards I created and of the fact I learned to animate fairly well in such a short period of time.
